Here is a crochet baby blanket that uses variegated and solid yarn, alternately.  I used a pink/white variegated and white as the solid.  You can use two colors that fit your requirements.  

13 ounces Variegated, sport weight yarn

8 ounces solid, sport weight yarn

Crochet Hook G

I crochet very tight, so I used an H hook and purchased an extra skein of each color.

Start with the Variegated yarn, chain 196 loosely.

Row 1:  DC in third chain from hook and in next 11 chains, 5 DC in next chain, DC in next 11 chains.  #Yarn Over (YO), insert hook in next stitch, YO and pull up a loop, YO and pull through 2 loops on the hook.  *YO, skip next stitch, insert hook in next stitch and pull up a loop.  YO and draw through 2 loops on hook.* Repeat from * to * once, YO and draw through all 4 loops on hook.dc in next 11 chains, 5 DC in next chain, DC in next 11 chains.  Repeat from # across to last 2 DC.  $YO, insert hook in next stitch, YO and pull up a loop.  YO and draw through 2 loops on hook.  Repeat from $ once, YO and draw through all 3 loops on hook.  Chain 2, turn.

Row 2:  DC in next DC, (Work BPdc, DC in next DC) 6 times, work BPdc around next dc, DC in same stitch, BPdc in same stitch.  (DC in next DC, work BPdc in next DC) 6 times.  #*YO, insert hook in next dc, YO and pull up a loop, YO and draw through 2 loops on hook.  Repeat from * 2 times more.  YO and draw through 4 loops on hook - counts as 1 DC.  (Work BPdc, DC in next DC) 6 times, work BPdc around next dc, DC in same stitch, BPdc in same stitch.  (DC in next DC, work BPdc in next DC) 6 times.  Repeat from # across to last 2 DC.  $YO, insert hook in next stitch, YO and pull up a loop.  YO and draw through 2 loops on hook.  Repeat from $ once, YO and draw through all 3 loops on hook.  Chain 3, changing to solid during the chains, turn.

Row 3:  (Skip next 2 stitches, Single Crochet in next stitch, chain 3) 4 times.  Skip next BPdc, (sc, ch3, sc) twice in next DC, skip next BPdc.  SC in next DC, (ch 3, skip next 2 stitches, sc in next st) 3 times, ch 1.  *skip next 2 std, dc in next dc, ch1.  (Skip next 2 stitches, Single Crochet in next stitch, chain 3) 4 times.  Skip next BPdc, (sc, ch3, sc) twice in next DC, skip next BPdc.  SC in next DC, (ch 3, skip next 2 stitches, sc in next st) 3 times, ch 1.;  repeat from *across to last 3 std.  Skip next 2 std, half double crochet in last double crochet to form last chain 3 space.  

Row 4:  Chain 3, turn.  (SC in next chain 3 space, chain 3) 4 times, (sc, chain 3, sc) in next chain 3 space.  (chain 3, sc in next chain 3 space) 4 times, chain 1.  *Skip next SC, DC in next DC, chain 1, (sc in next chain 3 space, chain 3) 4 times.  (Sc, chain 3, Sc) in next chain 3 space.  (Chain 3, SC in next chain 3 space) 4 times, chain 1.  Repeat from 8 across to last chain 3.  HDC in center of last chain 3 to form last chain three space.

Row 5 and 6 - Repeat row 4.

Row 7:  Chain 2, changing to variegated yarn.  Turn.  3 DC in each of next 4 three chain spaces.  5 DC in next 3 chain space.  3 DC in each of next 3 three chain spaces.  2 DC in next three chain space.  #*YO, insert hook in next dc, YO and pull up a loop, YO and draw through 2 loops on hook.  Repeat from * 2 times more.  YO and draw through 4 loops on hook - counts as 1 DC.  2 DC in next three chain space.  3 DC in each of next 3 three chain spaces.  5 DC in next 3 chain space.  3 DC in each of next 3 three chain spaces.  2 DC in next three chain space.  Repeat from # across to last 3 chain space.  YO, Insert hook into same space.  YO and pull up a loop, YO and draw through 2 loops on hook, YO, insert hook in center of last 3 chain space, YO and pull up a loop.  YO and draw through 2 loops on hook, YO and draw through all three loops on hook.

Row 8:  Row 2:  DC in next DC, (Work FPdc, DC in next DC) 6 times, work FPdc around next dc, DC in same stitch, FPdc in same stitch.  (DC in next DC, work FPdc in next DC) 6 times.  #*YO, insert hook in next dc, YO and pull up a loop, YO and draw through 2 loops on hook.  Repeat from * 2 times more.  YO and draw through 4 loops on hook - counts as 1 DC.  (Work FPdc, DC in next DC) 6 times, work FPdc around next dc, DC in same stitch, FPdc in same stitch.  (DC in next DC, work FPdc in next DC) 6 times.  Repeat from # across to last 2 DC.  $YO, insert hook in next stitch, YO and pull up a loop.  YO and draw through 2 loops on hook.  Repeat from $ once, YO and draw through all 3 loops on hook.  Chain 3, changing to solid during the chains, turn.

Row 9:  Chain 3, turn.  (SC in next chain 3 space, chain 3) 4 times, (sc, chain 3, sc) in next chain 3 space.  (chain 3, sc in next chain 3 space) 4 times, chain 1.  *Skip next SC, DC in next DC, chain 1, (sc in next chain 3 space, chain 3) 4 times.  (Sc, chain 3, Sc) in next chain 3 space.  (Chain 3, SC in next chain 3 space) 4 times, chain 1.  Repeat from 8 across to last chain 3.  HDC in center of last chain 3 to form last chain three space.

Row 10 and 11 - Repeat row 9.

Row 12:  Chain 2, changing to variegated yarn.  Turn.  3 DC in each of next 4 three chain spaces.  5 DC in next 3 chain space.  3 DC in each of next 3 three chain spaces.  2 DC in next three chain space.  #*YO, insert hook in next dc, YO and pull up a loop, YO and draw through 2 loops on hook.  Repeat from * 2 times more.  YO and draw through 4 loops on hook - counts as 1 DC.  2 DC in next three chain space.  3 DC in each of next 3 three chain spaces.  5 DC in next 3 chain space.  3 DC in each of next 3 three chain spaces.  2 DC in next three chain space.  Repeat from # across to last 3 chain space.  YO, Insert hook into same space.  YO and pull up a loop, YO and draw through 2 loops on hook, YO, insert hook in center of last 3 chain space, YO and pull up a loop.  YO and draw through 2 loops on hook, YO and draw through all three loops on hook.

Repeat rows 2 through 12 until afghan measures the length you like, finishing with row 2 or 8.  Turn and SC around entire blanket.  Finish off and weave in ends.
